How do I track progressive overload?

Learn how to track progressive overload by comparing load, reps, sets, range, control and effort across repeatable workouts.

Short answer

Track one repeatable training demand at a time: load, reps, sets, range of motion, tempo, rest or effort. Progress is easier to spot when the exercise and technique stay comparable.

Choose the signal

For a main lift, load and reps are usually the clearest starting point. For body-weight or rehabilitation work, assistance, range or controlled reps may be more useful.

Compare like with like

Keep the exercise variation, equipment and rep standard visible in the log. A heavier number is not automatically progress if the movement or range changed.

Do not force a jump

A stable week, cleaner technique or the same work at a lower effort can be useful progress. If fatigue or pain changes the movement, record that and ask a qualified professional when needed.
