What should I track in a workout log?
A practical workout-log checklist: exercises, sets, reps, load and the small pieces of context that make progress easier to review.
Short answer
At minimum, record the date, exercise or variation, sets, reps and load. Add effort, rest, sleep or a short note when that context changes how you understand the session.
Start with the repeatable core
Record the movement, the variation, the load, the reps and the sets you actually completed.
Use the same units and exercise names so a future comparison is honest.
Add context, not noise
RPE or reps in reserve can explain why the same load felt different. A short sleep, energy or technique note is enough; a perfect diary is not required.
Review the trend
Compare like-for-like sessions over several weeks. A workout log is most useful when it helps you see a change rather than judge one isolated session.
