TDEE vs BMR: what is the difference?
TDEE and BMR explained in plain language, including how activity changes the estimate and why your own weight trend matters more than one formula.
Short answer
BMR is an estimate of energy used at rest. TDEE is a broader daily estimate that starts with BMR and accounts for activity and other movement. Both are estimates, so your multi-week trend is the useful reality check.
BMR is the resting estimate
Basal metabolic rate describes the energy a body would use at rest under the formula’s assumptions. It is not a target for everyday eating.
TDEE adds activity
A TDEE estimate applies an activity factor to create a starting maintenance range. Training, work, steps and day-to-day movement can vary, so the factor is not a measurement.
Use your own trend
Compare a logged intake with weight trends over a few weeks, then discuss changes with a professional if you have a health condition or a specific clinical goal.
